The East coast offers super waves for surfers during the peak period. The best place to surf is in Arugam Bay. It is 400km from the airport and 300 km from Colombo. It is a small little fishing village with sweeping white beaches and\n crystal-clear blue waters with fantastic waves. The peak period here is between May and September. Here there are many offshore mornings and several nearby breaks that have headlands that have wind protection sufficient to keep things\n clean and readable right through the day.<\/p>\n

You will of course find huge crowds on this beach but if you explore the surrounding areas you could find good spots that are less crowded. Surfers usually are up and going long before dawn breaks. But it is certainly worth bracing\n the crowds for the fabulous time you could have surfing on the waves in this area.<\/p>\n

To get to the beach from your hotel you can easily take a tuk-tuk ride or you can organize with a local driver to take you. But do remember to negotiate the price for the ride before you put even a step inside it. This is the main break and it is a long right-hand point\/reef break which breaks at the headland. Here the Point is much bigger than other breaks and are usually 2 feet to 6 feet. It will sometimes give you a clean wall which\n will barrel in the sections and may give you a ride Right of 400 meters inside. Once you are out of it, paddle your board onto the beach and walk back to the entry point. At this point the reef begins at ankle depth so\n it is best if you wear some booties.<\/p>\n

In this area there are many small cafes where you can sit and sip a freshly plucked \u201cThambilit\u201d (Sweet coconut water) while you feast your eyes on other surfers while you recharge before going out again. The scenery in this\n area is also beautiful. The moon-shaped beach goes on endlessly. The water is warm and the waves are great. This point is about a half-hour tuk-tuk ride from Arugam Bay. It\u2019s a long sandy beach and is much less crowded. But here there are rocks along the way. The ride here from the outside section to the beach on the inside is about 800\n meters.<\/p>\n

This place is rather remote so do take your own food and water. <\/p>\n

Here you can work a four foot face and be only a few meters from the beach where it will grind down to the Sandy Point.<\/p>\n

Here \u201cThe outside section sucks up and throws out when the swell raps into the point giving a 30 meter wall to work before it truly fades as it hits deeper water for about 12 seconds.<\/p>\n

The wave then usually doubles up as it hits a shallow sand bottom section. It will certainly keep you hanging in there with all your might so as to be able to try the next 40 \u2013 80 meter section.\u201d<\/p>\n

 When you are finally through it, it will meekly peel for a long time before it ends up meters away from the beach. An awesome experience, but quite a challenge. <\/p>\n

At this point you can easily get a large swell in the middle section. <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

This is a very good place for experienced surfers. The waves breakoff a rocky outcrop, close to the beach. <\/p>\n

The swell here can be from 1 \u2013 6 meters which is ideal for the surfer. Although the waves are gentle, they are very powerful.<\/p>\n

This is a \u00bd hour tuk tuk ride from Arugam Bay and is a very popular for beginners. You can get their by tuk-tuk but don\u2019t forget to tell your tuk-tuk guy to come back for you at a specified time as this is a remote area and you will\n not be able to find a tuk tuk back. Also take food, water, umbrella and a towel.<\/p>\n

To reach this point you have to walk for about 20 minutes on the beachfront and clamber over rocks. You may even see an elephant or two on your way there if you are lucky.<\/p>\n

But during the day walking on the beach could be very sunny and hot. Its good for the intermediate and beginner surfers.<\/p>\n

When the point is 6 feet then the Crocodile rock will be 3 feet and you will need at least a medium to large swell for it to work. It\u2019s a mushy right ideal for the beginner and intermediate surfer.<\/p>\n

A beautiful beach of about 2 kms long. The waves here are good and mellow and is ideal for beginners. Left and right beach break peaks give you a mellow ride which is ideal for beginners. The waves here are good all year round.<\/p>\n

There is not only the main beach break on the main beach but there also are small beaches along the bay which has their own waves.<\/p>\n

Midigama<\/strong> \u2013 North of weligama is a very good beach with three great points \u2013 Lazy Left, Right and Rams Right. If you want to catch the Lazy Left go in the afternoon. The Right has a shallow reef break and is close to\n the road. For those advanced surfers, there is the Rams Right with a couple of barrels and short tight breaks. <\/p>\n

Gurubebila<\/strong> \u2013 here in the early morning you can catch the Plantation Point rides with both lefts and rights. It is a bit of a rocky entry but it is easy to ride. The Coconut Point is a classical A \u2013Frame formation and\n is better for experienced surfers only. <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

This is just a few kilometers east of Weligama. The sea is turquoise and crystal clear. Here you will find mellow right hand reef break which peels slowly and breaks over deep water. It is ideal for those who want to try reef breaks\n for the first time.<\/p>\n

But you also get the left and right handers here which is better for intermediate and advanced surfers.<\/p>\n

Just 115 km from the Airport which is a 3 \u00bd hour drive lies Hikkaduwa. Here you get not only the left and right handers it is also great for reef break which is an A-Frame where the big ones breakoff a predictable boil. The lefts are\n long and \u201chave good lip to them\u201d and the rights can barrel. At High tide the waves gets back-washy and is enjoyable.<\/p>\n

Bennys<\/strong> \u2013 A left hander reef break for the more experienced surfers as the waves are over 6 feet.<\/p>\n

Main Reef<\/strong> \u2013 A relatively safe left and right handers over a deeper reef can be used by all levels of surfers.<\/p>\n

North Jetty<\/strong> \u2013 Long left handers with a reef break by the harbor wall.<\/p>\n

Beach Break \u2013 This is a very safe shore and reef break and is ideal for beginners.<\/p>\n
